Central Environment Authority

Introduction of the Ministry of Environment:

The Central Environment Authority established on 12th August 1981, under the provisions of the National Environment Act No. 47 of 1980. The Ministry of Environment which was established in December, 2001 has the overall responsibility in the affairs of the Central Environment Authority with the objective of integrating environmental considerations in to the development process of the country. The CEA was given wider regulatory powers under the National Environment (Amendment) Acts No. 56 of 1988 and No. 53 of 2000.

Mission:

Flagship of the nation in protecting and managing the environment by coordination, public participation, enforcement, appropriate technological interventions, education and awareness.

Objectives:

  • Protect, mange and enhance the environment
  • Regulate, maintain and control the quality of environment.
  • Prevent, abate and control pollution.
  • Carrying out coordination tasks with the District Secretariat on projects implemented by Ministry of Environment.
  • Coordinating tasks required for solutions on environmental problems in the district.
  • Taking action when necessary to coordinate CEA and Geological Survey and Mines Buro which falls under the purview of Ministry of Environment in divisional level environment conservation activities and solving of environmental problems and directing relevant officers in the CEA and Geological Survey and Mining Buro for implementation of provisions relevant to National Environmental Act and Acts of Mines and Mineral substances.
  • On the instructions of the District Secretary, coordinate the tasks carried out in the Environment Committee with collaboration of officers in the Central Environment Authority and making aware of relevant institutions to implement decisions taken therin.
  • Active contribution to coordinate relevant government and non- governmental organizations in respect of environment conservation affairs.
  • Performing of other duties relevant to the subject of environment entrusted by the Secretary, Ministry of Environment.
